Ever since I moved to my apartment building last year, I have always wanted to take pictures of their family. One of the biggest reasons behind my eagerness is because I have never done any sort of family portraits before and I would love to try it out and gain some experience. I finally asked them and set the shoot up after I am less busier with school out of the way. (I have to admit I procrastinated a lot on this.) It was a challenging shoot as children are much harder to pose and direct (and I have never worked with children before).

Meet Eva and Ben, I lovveeee their eyes.

For the family portrait, I planned to set up a flash and shoot through an umbrella. However, I made an (sort of) amateur but definitely careless mistake. I had everything set up but did not notice as the toddler gave a gentle push on the umbrella while she was in her mother’s arm. The lightstand, along with my flash, fell over. My Cactus v4 receiver fell into pieces (I actually was going to use the Phottix Stratto triggers I got, but for some odd reason the receiver did not work, it seems like the metal cap for the battery is loosened). After that, my flash was acting very bipolar – it sometimes flashes and sometimes doesn’t. Since my receiver broke, I simply bounced my flash off the ceiling for the family portraits.

Lesson learned: keep children as far away from equipment as possible.

I would have done another photo because Eva is not looking, but my flash is acting out I had to cut the session short. Shame.

(I’m also not sure if the door is better when it’s closed or not, same with the lights…thoughts?)

Thank you Mike and Vicky for letting me experiment, it was a valuable experience.

Endnote: when the flash fell over, it all happened too fast and I was not able to react. I just wanted to continue the shoot as best as I could without it dampening my spirit. I kept assuring myself that dropping a flash is something any photographer has to go through at least once (hopefully). Thankfully the flash seems to be fine after I changed the batteries (which actually hasn’t been changed since I bought the flash…in December 2009….go figure)
